PE

Physical Education at Meadow

The teaching of Physical Education incorporates all elements of the National Curriculum and includes a range of team and individual sports, based around the enjoyment of sporting activity and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

We follow the 'Complete PE' programme which revisits key elements of Physical Education throughout years 1 to 6.

Every class has a PE session led by a specialist coach for one hour a week and children have an additional session delivered by teaching staff.

All lessons are focused on: the development of team work; fair-play; along with fostering an environment of healthy competitiveness and team spirit.

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities that are open to all abilities.

Physical activity is encouraged throughout the school day, both in and outside the classroom. We aim for children to take part in thirty minutes of structured activities each day to support good physical and mental health. These structured activities include: daily mile, super noodle, and structured lunchtime activities in both key stages.

As part of the School  Sports Partnership, we take part in a wide range of festivals and inter school competitions across a wide range of sports.

Through PE lessons, our children are taught the importance of healthy eating and nutrition with the aim that this will help them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

In Key Stage Two, children will be taught swimming, in line with the National Curriculum expectations, with the aim that all children will be able to swim twenty-five metres and have a knowledge of a range of swimming strokes. In addition to this, we offer additional lessons for those children who have not reached this milestone by the time they are in Year Six.

Passion for Learning sports festival

A number of our Year 5 and Year 6 children took part in a sports festival alongside other schools. This was to promote enjoyment of sport and wellbeing elements of sporting activities.  This video gives a flavour of the day.

Year 6 Tag Rugby Festival

A team of year 6 pupils participated in a Rugby Festival at Whitby Sports & Social club. All of the pupils had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities on offer, with some of our team being singled out by the coaches for their excellent performance. If anyone is interested in going along to give Rugby a ‘try’ all junior age groups for Ellesmere Port Rugby club train on Wednesday’s 18:30 - 19:30 and Sunday’s 10:30 - 12:30 at the Whitby Sports and Social club.

Chester Zoo Orienteering

A team of four year 6 pupils took part in the inaugural Chester Zoo Orienteering event. All of the children had a fantastic morning finding hidden clues around Chester Zoo, before successfully solving the twelve letter mystery word. To round off a fantastic morning the children were then selected to be filmed giving their views and feedback on the morning's event.

Finding the clues!

Year 2 Mini Kickers Football

On Wednesday 6th October a group of year 2 pupils represented Meadow at the EFC mini-kickers tournament at Vauxhall’s. All of the children played amazingly well and the team won all 6 of their games. After scoring 39 goals and conceding only 1, they finished in first place and will now go on to the next stage of the competition at Finch Farm - Everton’s training ground.

Year 3 and 4 Rugby Festival

On Thursday 14th October a team of year 3 & 4 pupils attended a Rugby Festival at Whitby Sports & Social Club. The event was hosted by Ellesmere Port Rugby Club and they were particularly impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all of our children. If anyone wishes to join the Ellesmere Port youth team they train at the Whitby Sports and Social Club on a Wednesday 18:30-19:30 and Sunday 10:30-12:00.

Boccia

In December 2021 our pupils were introduced to Boccia and invited to take part in a competition which we went on to win! We then went on to compete in the County finals in Warrington in January 2022 and finished second over all.

What a fantastic effort from all of the children in a brand new sport!

Year 3 and 4 Girls' Football Tournament

A team of yr 3 & 4 girls represented Meadow in a football tournament at EPSV. In a competitive group of 9 teams the girls played some fantastic football and eventually came out on top after winning 7 games and drawing 1. They will now go on to represent the district at Crewe Alexandra FC’s training complex in the New Year. Well done girls!!

Year 3 and 4 Girls' Football County Finals

Meadow girls got through to the finals and unfortunately lost on penalties.

Well done! An amazing performance!

Year 5 and 6 Girls' Football Tournament

A group of year 5 & 6 girls represented Meadow in a girls Football Tournament at EPSV. After some disappointment from their opening game (their ‘equalising goal’ being ruled out after it was judged to have crossed the line after the whistle had sounded) the girls never let their heads drop and went on to win all of their remaining fixtures. A nervous wait followed and the girls were announced as group winners on goal difference. After a closely fought battle in the final it remained goalless and penalties were required to separate the two teams. Confidence was high in our Yr 5 representatives and 2 of them stepped up to convert their penalties to give the girls the win. The team will now go on to represent the district at the area finals in the New Year at Crewe Alexandra FC’s training complex.

Year 5 and 6 Girls' Football County Finals

Amazing performance once again!

Year 6 Football tournament

A group of year 6 boys took part in a Football Tournament at EPSV. The participating schools were placed into two groups and following some really competitive games Meadow finished second overall in their group. As a result we took part in the 3rd / 4th place play off game against Willaston (who finished as runners up in their group respectively.) Another closely fought game took place with Willaston eventually claiming the victory and 3rd place overall.

Additional Activities to Support Learning

Young 'Mental Health Champions' Training

Two Year 5 children spent the day training to become mental health champions. They worked with World champion inline skater Jenna Downing and children from other schools to obtain a variety of skills which they can use to support their peers at Meadow. They have come back to school excited and ready to fulfill their new role.

World Champion inline skater, Jenna, worked with our children to develop skills to support peers.

Mental Health Champions

Our Mental Health Champions will work to develop provision for Mental Health through sports.
